History

The Bus, Tram and Cab Trades Gazette for 29th October 1898, stated that "everybody rides in omnibuses in these democratic days. The character of these useful public vehicles has entirely changed during the past few years, and the old lumbering fusty smelling coach with its manifold drawbacks has given place to a clean, roomy conveyance in which the comfort of the passenger is studied in every way". However, it is unlikely that a journey in this vehicle , with its iron shod wheels on the cobbled streets of hilly Edinburgh would really have been quite so comfortable, especially for passengers on the top deck in the rain!

Did you know?

The top deck was named the Garden Seat, and comes from the fact that the seats on the upper deck were made from slats of wood so they looked a lot like park benches.
