History

This is the sole survivor of the few vehicles of its type built at the height of the 1930's Depression. It was made by Beardmore and Co, perhaps best known for making London taxi cabs, and had a number of innovative design features. For example, the braking system used a spring wound drum that kept a permanent tension on the brake cable; and instead of being articulated the vehicle had a tractor drawbar which used a swan neck coupling mounted on a specailly designed weight transfer arrangement.

Marks & Spencer celebrated its centenary in 1984, and this vehicle was chosen to carry a 'Penny Stall' (everything a penny) in commemoration of the modest market stall beginnings of the company.
