History

Leyland supplied a truck-based popemobile in 1982 for Pope John Paul II’s visit to the UK. A high platform ensured visibility of the Pope in large crowds. To protect the Pontiff, the custom chassis was built to provide rapid acceleration and off-road capability in the event of an emergency, and bullet proof glass and under floor armour was installed.

Did you know?

Out of all the 'Popemobiles' (or 'Special Papal Transport') , this Leyland Constructor is certainly the biggest, weighing 24 tonnes.
